Career Management Fallacies

Unfortunately, career management is one of the things that has been set aside and shelved by a lot of people, and maybe you are one of them. Nearly everyone does not deem career management to be true not until his or her careers are on the losing edge or in extreme upheaval. They only act and fix it when they feel that something is wrong, out of place or is starting to fall apart. Why don’t we all try to slip in career management into our regular routine like how we do our laundry, pay our bills every month, send birthday cards to our loved ones or annually visit our doctor? Then maybe we would all be great achievers in our own field.

The top executives did not reach their rank by mere luck. Their secret? Setting goals, strategic planning coupled with sheer ambition and correct timing. That’s it! Career Management is an endless process that requires you to constantly climb up your ladder of success to reach the top. It is making things possible rather than waiting for good things to happen. It is in your hands where you want your career to be headed to and when you know where you are going, many doors will open for you. It makes you stand out among others because you unbelievably get things done without anybody understand how you did it. Our attitudes unswervingly influence where we will end up our quest for a good career so take time to contemplate assessing your outlook towards advancing your career. Decide what attitudes you are going to have, and, even if it means faking that you have a great attitude, why not do it until you make it?

Here are some career management fallacies you may have commonly bumped into:

1. The most qualified applicant solely gets the position. This is False because being “qualified” is not the only decisive factor in getting the job offer. A lot of applicants with lesser qualifications get hired because they were well prepared and showed off themselves in a more persuasive manner during the interview process. They have successfully convinced their employers that they are the perfect person for the job.

2. Having a job means having a career, so no need for career management. This is wrong because nobody really knows what lies ahead. No matter how well you do with your job, nothing is certain. Today you may have a good job, but tomorrow you may be laid off from your work. So even if you are currently employed, keep your achievement details up to date, socialize and meet professionals in your industry on a regular basis.

3. After I graduated from school, my professional education stopped too. Continuing education is the hallmark of a great go-getter because they are able to maintain a competitive edge by ensuring to stay at the forefront among others. Always search for ways to advance yourself like attending seminars and training courses or reading magazines and journals.

4. Most employers offer good compensation. This is untrue because generally, employers start offering you with a low salary. Others just want to see how you react while some wanted to test your negotiation skills or others just want to know whether you have made a salary research.

5. The resume is the only requirement in hunting for a job. This is totally incorrect because the resume is just one of the documents you will need. You will require other pertinent documents to support your application like employment certificates, accomplishment records, references and others.

6. Recruiters are enough in searching for a job. Although recruiters will help and guide you in finding a job, you cannot give them the full responsibility to get you hired. It is still you who will take charge in finding yourself a job.

7. Employers take control of my career path. You are the only person who can assume responsibility of your career path and manage it to the right direction.

8. You can easily find jobs in the Internet and newspapers. Only a small percentage of job postings are seen on the Web and on the newspapers. Try to seek jobs through networking, and you’ll see that most of the jobs are found there.

In order to have a positive effect on your career, always keep in mind that the time to get focused about your career is NOT when you realize you are about to be laid off from your job.
